The year before, Spenser had presented the work to Queen Elizabeth I in an effort to obtain a royal patronage. The Queen approved of the work, in part because it was seen as a flattering allegory promoting both her reign and the Tudor dynasty. Her approval helped boost the poem’s status in England upon its official publication. In 1596, Spenser then published the remaining three books of The Faerie Queene, thereby cementing his legacy as an English literary icon.
